Special Notes for Admission
Reception
The following factors must be considered while taking a child into the Reception class:
- Age to be 2+ at the commencement of the academic year i.e. 1st September.
- Child must be toilet trained.
- The Head must make general observations regarding the child’s behaviour taking into account:
- Speech/articulation
- Physical movement
- Inquisitiveness, alertness and sociability
- Head must encourage both parents to come to the first meeting and make his/her own assessment regarding the parent’ attitude.
- Head must be aware that each child is an individual with distinctive personality and that the development stages vary from child to child
- The Head of the school must give final approval in writing, before the student is admitted in the school
Prep-1
The following factors have to be considered while taking a child for admission in class Prep 1
- Child’s age to be 3+ at the commencement of the academic year.1st September.
- Child must be toilet trained.
- Head must his/her judgement regarding the child’s comprehension of:
- Simple questions pertaining to his/her name, age etc, to assess the child’s language and vocabulary skills.
- Preference should be given to children who comprehend:
- Colours (red, blue, green and yellow plus any other)
- Numbers 1-10---counting and recognition
- Recognition of letters of the alphabet
- Head to have a meeting with preferably both the parents to make his/her own judgement regarding the parent’s attitude.
- Head must make his/her own general assessment regarding the child’s behaviour i.e. sociability, alertness, inquisitiveness, aptitude and maturity.
- The Head of the school must give final approval in writing, before the student is admitted in the school
Prep-2
The following factors have to be taken into account while considering a child for admission in class Prep-2.
- Child’s age to be 4+ at the commencement of the academic year on 1st September.A child must be able to:
- Recognize letters of the alphabet a-z and read these phonetically.
- Read 2 or 3 letter words i.e. at, bat, cat, etc, also phonetically.
- Write letters of the alphabet from a-z.
- Count numbers orally 1-50.
- Comprehend and recognize numbers 1-50.
- Write numbers 1-50 or more.
- Match and name colours (basic and few more).
- Match and name shapes
- The Head must make his/her own assessment regarding the child’s speech and vocabulary development by holding a simple conversation with the child. This must also help him/her in gauging the child’s ability to listen and follow directions.
- The Head must also make his/her own assessment regarding a child’s motor skills (fine and gross)
- The Head must also make judgement regarding the child’s attitude i.e. confidence, co-operation, independence, friendliness, aptitude and maturity.
- The Head also meets the parents and forms her own opinion regarding their attitude.
- Finally, it must be remembered that if the child is 5 years old and coming from abroad, it is quite possible that he/she may not be able to write letters or numbers. In that case, the child’s level of maturity and aptitude can be judged by his/her drawings and other observations.
- The Head of the school must give final approval in writing, before the student is admitted in the school.
Classes 1-4
- Candidate must pass a written test set by the school in English, Maths and Urdu.
- Must pass the reading test based on the ‘Ladybird, Read with me Series 1-16’, as follows:
- Class1: Series 1-5
- Class 2 Series 6-10
- Class 3 Series 11-16
- Class 4 Children should be able to read level 3 of the"Read with Ladybird” series.
- The Head must ensure that a teacher administers the entrance test and actually sits with the child throughout the test to explain and read out the questions where necessary.
- All care must be taken to ensure that the child feels at home and can perform well.
- Child’s reading and comprehension level, as well as fluency in spoken English to be determined before admission is offered in a certain class.
- The Head of the school must give final approval in writing, before the student is admitted in the school
Classes 5-8
- The student must pass a written test in English, Mathematics and Urdu, set by the school
- The Head must ensure that the entrance test papers are checked by the concerned teacher; ideally by the subject teacher of the class in which the student is to be admitted.
- Student’s comprehension level, as well as fluency in spoken English to be determined before admission is offered in a certain class.
- The test must be properly graded and the teacher concerning the subject and the class, must comment and sign.
- The Head of the school must give final approval in writing, before the student is admitted in the school.
