1.8.5 - Conduct and Descipline

The school expects reasonable and courteous conduct at all times.

In cases of misconduct, the school reserves the right to take one or more of the following actions:

• School as mediator between two parties
• Verbal warning
• Loss of House/Class points
• Written warning (informing the parents)
• Fine
• Parent interview
• Private or public (i.e. in front of the class/school assembly) apology
• Withdrawal of breaks/games periods etc
• Withdrawal of monitorship/prefectship/head boy/girl status etc
• Righting the wrong eg students to paint desks if graffiti written by them
• Detention after school
• Suspension
• Written apology by the child and signed by the parent

 

1 - Fine
Fine is imposed only by the Disciplinary Committee if deemed appropriate.

2 - Detention after school

• Only given to pupils in Classes 5 and above

• Pupils are detained after school due to persistent misbehaviour (disruption/discipline).
• The relevant teacher gives the name of the pupil to the Office.
• The Admin Office after consulting the Head decides if misbehaviour deserves detention after school.
• A record is maintained of students awarded detentions.
• If more than 3 reports of misconduct are made to the Office for a child, the parents are told to meet the Head to discuss the misbehaviour.  The Head fills in a Yellow Form ‘Meeting with Parents’ which gives details of the reason for calling them and has the parents sign the form after giving an undertaking to reform the child.  This Yellow Form is then placed in the child’s file.  On the 3rd Yellow form, the child is made to withdraw.

Till class 4, detention is not set for misbehaviour.  Teachers are expected to be able to deal with misconduct in the classroom themselves.  Only in extreme cases teachers report misconduct to the Office.  The Head then meets the parents regarding misbehaviour and follows the ‘Yellow Form’ procedure stated above.

3 - Suspension

• Is given by the Head as a final punishment – maximum duration 2 working days.
• For more than three days, approval must be sought from the Regional Director.
• Is given when the Head has recommended expulsion to the Disciplinary Committee.  Suspension stays till the decision by the Committee.  For details see below.

In case of persistent misconduct the student may be required to be withdrawn.

4 - Gross Misconduct

Verbal, written or physical abusiveness by a pupil or person(s) acting on behalf of the pupil (with or without the pupil’s knowledge or consent) inside or outside the school premises, may be deemed gross misconduct.

The school reserves the right to define what constitutes gross misconduct.

In case of gross misconduct, the pupil is immediately suspended, with a recommendation by the Head for his/her, expulsion.  The case is forwarded to the Disciplinary Committee, which decides the case.  The decision of the Committee is final and is binding on the pupil, parents/guardians and the school management.

Misconduct by a pupil’s parent/guardian or any representative of the pupil towards the school staff or students may result in disciplinary proceedings which may in turn, lead to the withdrawal of the pupil from the school.

As the school is coeducational, we take serious note of misbehavior by boys towards girl pupils.  Such misbehavior inside or outside school may be deemed gross misconduct.

Corporal punishment and abusive language towards pupils is not allowed and any member of staff believed to have used these is not allowed to continue with the school.  In the same spirit, parents are expected to exercise control and courtesy when communicating with any member of the school staff
